The Sun City Resort in the North West Province of South Africa is one of the most famous casino resorts on the continent. It is owned by Sun International which also runs more than two dozen other resorts and casinos in different parts of the world.
One of a Kind
Sun City was founded by Solomon (Sol) Kerzner in 1979. At the time gambling was illegal within South Africa but the then independent state of Bophuthatswana had no such restrictions. It is therefore no coincidence that Kerzner set up shop in the area.
The casino continued to thrive due to its proximity to some of South Africa’s largest cities including Johannesburg and Pretoria. However, the advent of the struggle for independence brought some problems to the resort. There were boycotts where leading artists including Steven Van Zandt refused to perform at the resort due to apartheid. And then there were the likes of Queen who dared to stage shows at the resort and got a mammoth backlash.
Leaving Lasting Impressions
A facility of Sun City’s caliber has got to get its name written in history books and this resort has certainly succeeded in doing that. Between 1992 and 1995 the resort’s Sun City Super Bowl Arena welcomed the world’s most beautiful women to compete in the Miss World pageant. Sun City also hosted the competition’s 2001 edition.
In addition, one of the resort’s golf courses, The Gary Player Country Club. has hosted the Nedbank Golf Challenge since its inception in 1981. The Super Bowl Arena also hosted the 2nd International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA Awards) in 2001.
Gaming at its Best
As can be expected, the casino features Blackjack, Punto Banco, American Roulette and Slots. However it is worth noting that the table games are not available throughout the day; there is a break from play during the early morning hours.
If you want some special treatment then sign up for the casino’s Most Valued Guests (MVG) loyalty program. It incorporates all of Sun International’s casinos and accords you some privileges. For instance, you have access to the casino’s Salon Privé, Tables Privé and The Palace Salon (at The Palace of the Lost City).
When Sun City opened, one of its most prominent features was it auditorium that could sit more than 6,000 people. Today, its main attractions include four hotels: Sun City, Cascades, The Cabanas and The Palace of the Lost City. What’s more, the resort also takes great pride in its Waterpark, Sun City Vacation Club and two 18-hole golf courses.
The casino has also taken deliberate steps to reach out to non-gamers. A good example of this effort is the annual hosting of the Springbreak Summer Festival which brings together the young (and the young at heart) for five days of high-octane entertainment. There is also something for families and corporates: The Maze of the Lost City which covers about 21,000 square feet and can comfortably accommodate two hundred people.
